Krabi Family Vacation Spots

Krabi is becoming increasing popular as a vacation destination in Thailand. When you consider all that Thailand has to offer its tourists, you realize Krabi has its own charms to draw so many visitors to its hotels and guesthouses.

Krabi has much to offer the adventure minded family. Beaches are a big part of Krabi and it is certainly possible to just lay on the beaches all day. But Krabi is full of many other possibilities for active sports minded families.

Krabi Family Attractions

Rock Climbing

The towering limestone rocks in Krabi are the reason climbers from all over the world come to scale their heights. Many beginners and pros alike try their hand here, whether they are looking for an adventurous day out, or a more serious involvement in the sport.

The most popular areas for climbing are Railay Beach and Ton Sai. The Krabi area is a very popular climbing destination but with so many bolted routes (over 600), there seems to be room for everyone who stops by for a climb.

Kayaking

If climbing is not your thing, what about kayaking? It's a fun way to explore Krabi’s beautiful scenery without damaging the environment. The guided tours on offer take you to three main areas around Ao Luk in the north of the province: Ao Thalane (mangrove and canyons) at the southern tip of Phang Nga Bay; Bor Thor (ancient limestone caves); and Hong Island with a 'hidden' lagoon at its center.

In every place, you'll be able to observe wildlife up close. Several species of birds (hornbills, kingfishers, little herons) are easily spotted, as well as monkeys, in particular the crab-eating macaque. On Hong Island, the marine life includes brightly-coloured crabs, many tropical fish and birds, and the occasional giant monitor lizard.

If you've never kayaked before, don't worry. Instruction is given and the routes followed are relatively easy - although expect to have aching arms the next day! This is a must do for adventurous families.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

With around 100 miles of coastline meeting the emerald Andaman Sea, as well as its many islands, Krabi boasts more than 32 dive sites and countless more snorkeling spots. If you are fascinated by underwater life, Krabi offers a rich marine environment, with superb corals, pinnacles, underwater caves and rock formations. Leopard sharks, turtles, and even dolphins are regularly spotted.

The majority of dive locations are shallow and thus suitable for all levels of divers, from beginner to pro. Any number of PADI-certified dive schools exist to teach beginners, either on a day-long 'Discover Scuba Diving' trip, or a more serious Open Water course, upon completion of which you will receive an internationally valid diving license. Courses are taught in most major European languages, plus Japanese and Thai.

Those who are already qualified can go on 'fun dives' with knowledgeable, locally-based guides, or further their existing skills with the full range of PADI courses and specialities, right up to Instructor level. Two world class dive sites, Hin Daeng and Hin Muang - which at about 220 feet is the deepest drop-off in Thai waters - are a big draw for serious divers.

Krabi is considered a good place to base a diving holiday as, unlike many of the smaller islands on the east coast of Thailand, it offers a wide variety of other activities for non-diving companions.
